5 Superstars We Want To See On The Main Roster
Published by:

In a locker room filled with Divas, Sasha Banks is The Boss. The current NXT Women’s Champion is the total package, with the moves of an experienced ring general and mic skills that would make even the most outspoken Diva blush. So why not let The Boss step inside a WWE ring to see if she can hang with the likes of The Bellas, Naomi and Natalya? If anyone can do it, it’s Banks. Just watch her five-star contests against Charlotte, Bayley and just about anyone else in the NXT women’s division.

The confident champion would bring a new attitude to the Divas division, one that only the Boston native can bring. And with her already climbing the NXT ranks, it may only be a matter of time before we see Banks depositing a statement in the WWE Divas locker room. You can bank on that. — SCOTT TAYLOR

NXT Women’s Championship Announced For Takover: Unstoppabl...
Published by:

Two of NXT’s brightest stars will clash for the NXT Women’s Championship at TakeOver: Unstoppable, when Sasha Banks defends her title against Becky Lynch.

The rivalry between the two Divas can be traced back to last October, when Lynch joined forces with Banks. Known as Team BAE (Best at Everything), the two ran roughshod over the NXT Women’s division, doing everything in their power to make sure Banks captured the NXT Women’s Title. However, their friendship began to fracture after Lynch made it clear she aspired to be more than a lackey to The Boss.

Their tenuous friendship seemed to be a positive as they entered a Fatal 4-Way Match against Charlotte and Bayley for the title at TakeOver: Rival in February, until the championship dreams of both Divas led to a furious butting of heads. At the end of the epic match-up, it was Banks who walked out with the title.

On April 22, Lynch defeated Charlotte and Bayley in a Triple Threat Match to become the No. 1 Contender to Banks’ championship. The Irish Diva let The Boss know soon after that it wouldn’t be long before the title was around her waist.

The two Divas met in the ring on May 6 to sign the contract for their showdown at TakeOver. Before signing her name on the dotted line, Lynch detailed the journey that started when she was 15 to that very moment, explaining that she didn’t come to just be a part of NXT, she came to be a champion. After putting her own stamp (literally) on the contract, Banks attacked Lynch, eventually stepping on Becky’s head while holding her title high. However, The Boss took a little too much time to gloat, giving Becky an opening to lock on a devastating armbar that forced Sasha to tap out in the middle of the ring.

Will Becky Lynch’s dreams come true or will Sasha Banks show why she’s The Boss of NXT? Find out at NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable, LIVE on the award-winning WWE Network on Wednesday, May 20 at 8 ET/5 PT. PRO WRESTLING: Proud women’s champ Sasha Banks brings beauty, ...
Published by:

Mom knows best, but good thing NXT women’s champ Sasha Banks didn’t listen to hers.

Growing up, her mother, Judith, frowned upon her interest in pro wrestling.

Really. What mom wants their daughter to dream of making a career flipping, kicking, punching, bodyslamming, and badmouthing other women?

But what mom wouldn’t want their daughter to be happy and successful?

Banks is very happy these days and very successful. She is WWE’s NXT women’s champ, and her mom couldn’t be prouder.

Banks watched pro wrestling as a youngster… sometimes. If mom caught her watching, off it went. She literally took Banks’ TV. Her conservative mom didn’t want her watching ‘that.’ Banks loved it, though.

Born in Fairfield, California, she lived there until she was 8. She then went from the city to the farm with her aunt in Iowa. She lived in Iowa four years, before moving to Oregon for five months and then returned to California for three months, before venturing to Minnesota for four years. After that, she settled in Boston.

As Banks evolved into an athletic young lady, she decided to test the pro wrestling waters where her once reluctant mother eventually became her biggest fan.

“From my mom telling me ‘no’ to now telling everyone I’m the champion, and she’s so proud of me,” an emotional Banks said, “and to prove to a lot of people — who didn’t believe in me, who didn’t think I was going to be here — that I’m here, and I did it. It’s been a roller coaster of emotions; it’s amazing.”

Chaotic start

Boston is the birthplace of her pro wrestling career.

She said: “I call Boston home because it’s where I started coming into my own.”

Debuting in 2010 with Chaotic Wrestling in Boston, Banks learned from trainers Brian Fury, Brian Milonas and Todd Smith.

Milonas, a wrestler and company officer with Chaotic Wrestling, served as head trainer when Banks began her pro wrestling journey.

“She stood out immediately,” Milonas recalled via email. “Her first day was during a one day camp for first timers. She earned a three-month scholarship based on the potential we saw. She was athletic but not overly aggressive.”

Since men far out-numbered women enrolled at a pro wrestling school, any pro wrestling school, Banks trained with guys. That actually helped her aggressiveness.

“She trained right with guys who were twice her size, in my case three times her size,” he said. “I never questioned her toughness for a minute. She hung with and surpassed many of the guys she trained with.”

Banks, a true student of the game, too.

“She picked things up very quickly,” Milonas said. “She was always at class, always asking questions, always looking to get better. She was someone you wanted to help because you could see how much she loved wrestling.”

Away from the ring, “Quiet, shy but very respectful,” he said. “I always appreciated how [Sasha] carried herself at such a young age. Mature beyond her years.”

Banks wrestled as Mercedes KV.

“I remember talking to her about [her wrestling name], and we all thought Mercedes was a great name,” Milonas said. “KV was the first letters of her hyphenated last name.”

The Chaotic Wrestling family is following the career of Banks.

Milonas said, “There’s no doubt in my mind she will be a major Superstar with WWE. Her attitude, passion and athleticism are second to none. I’m extremely proud of her, and I’m excited to see what’s next for her.

WWE beginning

In 2012, she landed a developmental deal with WWE, after a successful WWE tryout camp. She began with WWE’s FCW and did a good job learning. Then WWE took developmental to the next level, and since working with WWE coach/trainer Sara Amato (Sara Del Rey) at the state-of-the-art WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Banks really elevated her game.

With a catchy name — The BO$$ Sasha Banks — and finishers dubbed the Bank Statement and Bankrupt, a star was developing.

As for her look, unique from head to toe with money sign medallions, thick decorative chains, cool blinder shades, dark armbands, blue painted nails, purple red hair, more specially designed jewelry, and lots of The Boss — Boss T-shirt (Legit Boss front, Banks On It back), multi-finger-wide Boss ring, Boss necklace, and even a gold banded Boss stamper to sign autographs The Boss way.

“I’ve always known that I wanted to be different. I wanted to stand out,” she said, “so my gear is very elaborate, very blingy, very loud, because I want people to notice me, want to look like me. The Boss necklace, the ring. I want everything big.”

Mikaze, a talented indie wrestler who designs gear, is the finisher behind Sasha’s big wardrobe inspirations.

“Most recently I haven’t been able to pick out what colors I wanted or scheme,” Banks said. “I just had him do it, because now he knows what I want. He envisions it. I just tell him, ‘I want to look the best, the greatest. Just do your thing,’ and he always makes me look amazing.”

At NXT shows from Full Sail Live in Winter Park on WWE Network or on the road like at the Havert L. Fenn Center in Fort Pierce or via social media, fans embrace The Boss look.

“It’s really cool to see how many people try to imitate me or wear my stuff,” she said. “I get a lot of Instagram videos of people doing my entrance. I think that’s so cool. To see the variety of people, little girls, guys, doing it. I never really thought that would happen. It’s amazing.”

NXT present

Banks, 23, is The Boss of NXT, literally and figuratively, as she won the NXT women’s title in February in a fatal four-way over standouts Charlotte, Bayley and Becky Lynch during the NXT TakeOver: Rival live special on WWE Network from Full Sail Live at Full Sail University in Winter Park, near Orlando.

“Just to be a part of that, it’s really indescribable,” Banks said. “It’s something I’ve always dreamed of, but I never really saw it happening. So to be in the moment and see it happening was just crazy.”

She continued: “I’ve never had so many tweets in my life. Afterward, people were tweeting ‘That match was Match of the Night.’ ‘You women are [going above and beyond].’”

Women’s wrestling is thriving in NXT, and that is helping build a brand.

What started as development is still developmental, but it has also progressed into a brand.

NXT is white hot, and Banks is a big reason why.

“To see how far NXT has grown and to be able to be a part of that is truly humbling,” Banks said, “because years later, we’re going to look back, and I’m going to be part of history.

“To have a show in Columbus and have it sell out [snaps her fingers] like that, which made us have a show in San Jose, and we sold out [snaps her fingers] just like that, it’s amazing.”

Banks is amazing, determined, focused and improving.

Taking the NXT women’s title from her will be a very difficult task.

Who will try?

Well, you’ve heard the expression, and it’s apropos in this case.

“Don’t cross The Boss.”

So opponents … good luck.

Snoop Banks

Banks is cousins with recording artist, actor and WWE fan Snoop Dogg. He appeared at WrestleMania 24 in 2008 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Banks appeared at WrestleMania 30 in 2014 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

“I hope one day he can make my entrance music,” Banks said. “All my family on that side are big WWE fans, huge.”

Banks, a fan of all music, just started listening to country music.

Elite status: Sasha Banks on her milestone win and being a role ...
Published by:

Sasha Banks’ NXT Women’s Championship victory at NXT TakeOver: Rival turned heads for more reasons than one. Some observers called The Boss’ defeat of Charlotte an upset, while others believed her title win was long overdue. Nonetheless, Banks has now reached elite status in NXT’s women’s division.

Following a successful title defense against the former champion Charlotte, Banks may have solidified the certainty of a long-term title reign. She talks to about her milestone win, thoughts on past champions and her identity as a role model to young women and much more. As expected, The Boss pulls no punches, and you can most certainly “bank” on that.

WWE.COM: You did what many observers never expected to happen and that’s become NXT Women’s Champion. How do you feel about your accomplishment?

BANKS: I feel like it’s been a long time coming. Ever since I was 10 years old, I’ve had this vision of me standing in the ring with a championship title held high above my head. Today, it’s not just a vision, it’s a reality. And no matter what happens in the future, that moment will live on forever in history and on WWE Network.

WWE.COM: You’ve come a long way from the shy, humble girl that started on NXT a couple years ago. Can you speak about how your attitude has changed from the day you started to now?

BANKS: I remember walking into NXT that first day. I was nervous and I was scared. All I wanted to do was win over every single fan that paid their hard-earned money to see me perform. I realize now that no matter how great you are or try to be, there will always be people who look down upon you. Whether its jealousy, envy, whatever. And that’s OK. I know where I’m headed, and they’re not going to drag me down.

WWE.COM: Some have described you as overly cocky and self-absorbed. How do you respond to those descriptions?

BANKS: People can think what they want of me. It’s all dust off my shoulder. At the end of the day, to succeed in this business, you have to believe that you’re the best to ever do it. You have to know in your heart that no one can outshine you. If you don’t believe in yourself, why should anyone else?

WWE.COM: After you defeated Charlotte for the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT TakeOver: Rival, she offered to shake your hand. Rather than return the favor, you chose to shove her away from you. Why?

BANKS: That girl walks around with a chip on her shoulder. She thinks she deserves her accolades when she’s really been piggybacking off of her last name. Charlotte forgot everything I taught her while we were on the same team as the BFFs. In her warped mind, all you need is genetics to be successful. So when I shoved Charlotte, that shove represented a moment for all the true hard workers of the world, which obviously doesn’t include her.

WWE.COM: Seems like you lost your humility a bit …

BANKS: Hold on, people act as if I’ve had this attitude my whole time here at NXT. But they forget that during my first year, I was a humble dreamer. Where did that get me? Exactly!

WWE.COM: What separates you from the previous NXT Women’s Champions like Paige and, of course, Charlotte?

BANKS: Anyone can hang a title across their shoulder and call themselves a champion. Me? I’m a star. When I walk onto that stage, all eyes are on me because I shine brighter than they ever could. I’ve got the Superstar looks and the skills in the ring to back it up. That’s the difference.

WWE.COM: How would you describe the era of Sasha Banks as champion?

BANKS: If you look at it in historical terms, Paige was the first champion so her era was like an introduction into this higher level of female empowerment. Charlotte’s era was similar to what Brock Lesnar is now. Just a dominant, “It’s gonna take the world to take me down”-type of competitor. My era is bigger than that. I’m going to transcend boundaries. I’m aiming for an era that’s on par with The Rock. Sasha Banks will be a name that’s on everyone’s tongues, and not just fans of NXT. Bank on it.

WWE.COM: Do you see yourself as a role model to young girls at this stage?

BANKS: I believe I am. Bayley, for all her hugs and lovingness, can be a bit naive. I think that type of inspirational figure can leave girls a bit vulnerable in the real world. I’m showing young girls that to be a big deal in life, you have to be a big deal inside. You have to believe that nothing in this world is too farfetched, and if you want something bad enough, you can’t let anyone tell you you’re not good enough to achieve it. In order to be a star, you have to walk, talk and act like a star.

WWE.COM: What have your past relationships with Charlotte, Summer Rae and Becky Lynch taught you?

BANKS: They showed me probably the most valuable lesson in the world. You can put your trust in people and rely on them to have your back, but at the end of the day, it’s you that is going to have to put in the time, the work and the sacrifice in order to succeed. After helping them all, each and every one of them stabbed me in the back. And look where that’s gotten them. I’m the NXT Women’s Champion, not them.

WWE.COM: Speaking of your title, what does your future hold as Champion?

BANKS: I’ve got the NXT Women’s Championship around my waist. That was the easy part. Now, it’s time to broaden the horizon. It’s time to show the world how big the NXT Universe is and how Sasha Banks is the brightest star in it. Then and only then will I set my sights on much bigger fish. Hey, WWE Divas, I hope you’re ready.
